To provide some context, Ukiyo-e (浮世絵) is a style of drawing or painting that was popular throughout Edo and Meiji-period Japan (17th-earth 20th Century), that was made accessible to the mass public in the form of woodblock prints. It is also known as the foundation of the Japanese manga anime culture.
This ōban yoko-e (landscape-oriented large panel) was executed as a part of an epic 36-page series called the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, with this particular page gaining the most fame over the years for various reasons. It beautifully depicts the ocean with Mount Fuji in the background, with boats and rowers navigating treacherously through massive white waves.
