  • Artwork Information:

    • Painted in 1889 during Van Gogh's stay at the asylum located in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, in which he seemingly enjoyed with far more freedom allowed than other patients.  This scene depicts a view out of his bedroom window, which Van Gogh painted no fewer than twenty-one times until his death.
    • The Starry Night is the only example of this scene painted at night, although he has painted numerous pieces of night skies such as Starry Night Over the Rhône, this piece is the only one to feature a cypress tree which has "always occupied his minds."
    • He was said to be dissatisfied with the painting, and held it back until sending it to his brother and art dealer as well as his provider and patron, Theo.  Vincent passed away shortly after this, and Theo followed six months later, but Theo's widow, Jo, has meticulously maintained as well as documented the brothers' legacy, and a big reason why many of Vincent's work can be appreciated by people today.
